2. Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth;

2. “Sons I have reared and brought up,

2. But they have revolted against Me.

3. An ox knows its owner,

3. And a donkey its master’s manger,

3. But Israel does not know,

3. My people do not understand.”

4. Alas, sinful nation,

4. People weighed down with iniquity,

4. Offspring of evildoers,

4. Sons who act corruptly!

4. They have abandoned the Lord,

4. They have turned away from Him.

5. Where will you be stricken again,

5. As you continue in your rebellion?

5. The whole head is sick

5. And the whole heart is faint.

6. From the sole of the foot even to the head

6. There is nothing sound in it,

6. Only bruises, welts and raw wounds,

7. Your land is desolate,

9. Unless the Lord of hosts

9. Had left us a few survivors,

9. We would be like Sodom,

9. We would be like Gomorrah.

10. Hear the word of the Lord,

10. You rulers of Sodom;

10. Give ear to the instruction of our God,

11. Says the Lord.

11. And the fat of fed cattle;

13. Incense is an abomination to Me.

14. They have become a burden to Me;

16. Cease to do evil,

18. Says the Lord,

18. “Though your sins are as scarlet,

18. They will be as white as snow;

18. Though they are red like crimson,

18. They will be like wool.

19. If you consent and obey,

19. You will eat the best of the land;

20. But if you refuse and rebel,

20. You will be devoured by the sword.”

20. Truly, the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

21. She who was full of justice!

21. Righteousness once lodged in her,

21. But now murderers.

22. Your silver has become dross,

22. Your drink diluted with water.

23. Your rulers are rebels

23. And companions of thieves;

23. Everyone loves a bribe

23. And chases after rewards.

23. They do not defend the orphan,

24. Therefore the Lord God of hosts,

24. The Mighty One of Israel, declares,

24. And avenge Myself on My foes.

25. I will also turn My hand against you,

25. And will smelt away your dross as with lye

25. And will remove all your alloy.

26. A faithful city.”

30. Or as a garden that has no water.

31. The strong man will become tinder,

31. His work also a spark.

31. Thus they shall both burn together

31. And there will be none to quench them.
